Windows and Fenestration

Status
Completed (1982 - 1986)

Overview

The advent of higher energy costs has provided the incentive for introducing substantial technological improvements in window design, in order to minimise heat losses from the building while maintaining the multi-functional character of the window.

This project provided for architects and manufacturers as well as researchers a comprehensive guide to actual or calculated window performances and to the terminology and test procedures applicable to window properties. It also clarified the major interactions between window properties and building design from the point of view of the energy consumption of the building.

Four comprehensive reports of this project deal primarily with window physics and the influence of window type, size and orientation on the energy consumption of buildings. Lighting, thermal comfort and other energy-related aspects are included where relevant to heating. cooling or lighting equipment.
