IEA-EBC Annex 85 11st Workshop

October 19-20, 2023
Beijing
China

Draft Agenda of the workshop ((19th October 2023, Beijing at Beijing Time: 9:00~18:30)

  • Welcome and introduction (participants in person, 20 mins, 9:00~9:20)
  • Status report of Annex 85 (Xiaoyun Xie, 20mins, 9:20~9:40)

To study the feasibility and provide the roadmap of using indirect evaporative cooling technology in different dry regions of the world is the main focus of the proposed project. To answer the Feasibility of IEC/DEC, is the first important goal of Annex 85, then the performance in energy consumption, water consumption and so on.

  • Real Applications of IEC/DEC processes (groups in person, 50mins, 9:40~10:30)
    • Application of IEC in Denmark (Hicham, 9:40~10:05, Denmark group)

The presentation introduced the application of IEC system in Denmark, and found evaporative cooling system has 10% better overall climate score. This is mainly attributed to the reduced electricity use redirected towards low-CO2 heat production from district heating in summer. And evaporative cooling system has 52% better climate score contribution for material use.

  • IEC/DEC applied in two data centers in China (10:05~10:30, China group)

The presentation introduced two system applied in two data centers in China. In the first data center, with the advantage of the hot and dry climate, full-year natural cooling can be realized by the IEC water chillers. In the second data center, is cooled by mechanical chillers in summer with hot and wet climate.

  • Modeling of IEC/DEC processes (groups in person, 50mins, 10:45~11:35)
    • Modeling of IEC dew point air coolers (France group, Chadi and Tala,10:45~11:10)

The presentation introduced modeling of IEC dew point air coolers. The Model of DPC has been implemented in EES and model is validated with experimental Date form literature. And discuss feasibility for two France cities (north and south of France).

  • “Mass transfer Only” evaporative cooling process, based on IEC water chiller process (Hao Zhang, China group, 11:10~11:35)

The presentation introduced a heat and mass transfer when Le approaches 0, where only mass transfer occurs. When the transfer area is infinite, only mass transfer between air and water occurs indeed. Compared with DEC and IEC system, this process has water saving potential.

  • Feasibility Analysis of Indirect evaporative cooling (170mins, 14:10~17:00)
    • General idea of Feasibility Analysis of Indirect Evaporative cooling. (Xiaoyun Xie, Jiale Fan, Yi Jiang, 14:10~14:50, China group)

The presentation introduced definition of feasibility: fully feasible, part feasible and not feasible. And give method to analysis the feasibility, consider humid load and cooling load, and the indicator is wet bulb efficiency and dew point efficiency. The calculation of feasibility is presented through a concrete example.

  • Feasibility analysis of IEC/DEC in Denmark (possible results and research plan). (Ali, 15:20~15:50, Denmark group)

The presentation introduced feasibility analysis of IEC/DEC in Denmark. Relative humidity in Denmark is relatively high (summer) and relatively lower (winter, building ventilation system need humidity part). Given that Denmark has relatively high humidity levels, the potential for DEC might be limited, but IEC offers a more feasible option, especially when combined with other systems in a hybrid approach.

  • Feasibility analysis of IEC/DEC in Spain (possible results and research plan) (Manuel group, et al, 16:05~16:35, Spain group)

The presentation introduced IEC/DEC feasibility analysis of three cities in Spain. Given non-guarantee hours and supply air in three cities. Given the efficiency of the three cities at maximum and average dry bulb temperatures.

  • Feasibility analysis of IEC/DEC in Italy (possible results and research plan)(Stefano group, et al, 16:35~17:05, Italy group)

The presentation introduced IEC installation benefit analysis in three cities: Madrid, Berlin, Riyadh. Riyadh is the city that benefit most from the installation of the IEC system. Also introduced IEC's case in data centers.

  • Discussion of next work plan of Annex 85, including structure of final reports and cooperation papers of Annex 85, next in person workshop et al. (all, 85mins, 17:35~19:00)
